  • Origin: Native to East Asia, primarily China, Korea, Japan, and Siberia, where it inhabits slow-moving rivers, ponds, and rice paddies.
  • Popularity: Loved by aquarists for its hardy nature, peaceful temperament, and striking golden coloration, making it a standout bottom-dweller in community tanks.

🎨 Appearance

  • Color: Golden to yellow-orange body with a subtle metallic sheen.
  • Structure:
    • Long, slender, eel-like body.
    • Small downward-facing mouth surrounded by six short barbels used to search for food.
    • Smooth, scale-like skin with a soft texture.
  • Size: Typically 6–8 inches (15–20 cm) in aquariums; can grow up to 10 inches (25 cm) in larger tanks.
  • Lifespan: 8–10 years, sometimes longer in well-maintained environments.

  • Tank Size: Minimum 55 gallons for a group (they prefer company).
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 68–75°F (20–24°C)
    • pH: 6.5–8.0
    • Hardness: 5–12 dGH
  • Lighting: Moderate; avoid overly bright lighting.
  • Substrate: Fine sand or smooth gravel to protect their delicate barbels.
  • Habitat Setup:
    • Provide plenty of hiding spots with rocks, driftwood, and plants.
    • Keep good water flow and oxygenation.
    • Secure lid — they can jump, especially before storms (they sense pressure changes).
