  • Scientific Name: Carassius auratus auratus (Oranda variety)
  • Family: Cyprinidae (Carps and Goldfish)
  • Origin: Originally bred in China and Japan, selectively developed for ornamental beauty.
  • Popularity: One of the most admired fancy goldfish varieties, prized for its distinct head growth (“wen”) and elegant color contrast of deep black and vibrant red.

🎨 Appearance

  • Body Color: Striking mix of velvety black and bright red — usually red around the head or fins with black across the body and back.
  • Distinctive Features:
    • Prominent hood or wen growth over the head, unique to Orandas.
    • Rounded body with flowing double tail fins.
    • Graceful swimming motion, slower than standard goldfish.
  • Size: Medium — typically 6–8 inches (15–20 cm) in aquariums.
  • Lifespan: 10–15 years with excellent care and clean water.

🏡 Tank Requirements

  • Tank Size: Minimum 30 gallons for one Oranda (add 10–15 gallons per additional fish).
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 65–75°F (18–24°C)
    • pH: 6.5–7.5
    • Hardness: 5–19 dGH
  • Habitat Setup:
    • Use smooth gravel or sand to prevent injury to the wen.
    • Provide open swimming space and gentle filtration (avoid strong currents).
    • Add plants and ornaments carefully — they can damage delicate fins.
    • Regular partial water changes (20–30% weekly) are essential.
