- Family: Callichthyidae (Cory Catfish)
- Origin: Native to South America, specifically the Orinoco River Basin in Venezuela and Colombia. They inhabit shallow, slow-moving waters rich in leaf litter and plants.
- Popularity: Loved for their tiny size, peaceful nature, and adorable “peppered” pattern — a favorite among nano and community tank keepers.
🎨 Appearance
- Color:
- Base body is light beige to silver.
- Covered with fine black and brown speckles, giving a “salt and pepper” look.
- A subtle dark stripe runs horizontally across the mid-body.
- Structure:
- Short, rounded body with barbels around the mouth for foraging.
- Clear fins with delicate spotting.
- Size:
- Very small — 1 to 1.25 inches (2.5–3 cm).
- Lifespan: 4–5 years, sometimes longer with excellent care.
🏡 Tank Requirements
- Tank Size: Minimum 10 gallons, ideal for nano or planted tanks.

- Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water.
- Lighting: Low to moderate.

- Soft sand is ideal — protects their sensitive barbels.

- Provide dense plants, driftwood, leaf litter, and shaded hiding areas.
- Gentle water flow; they prefer calm, clean water.
🍽️ Diet

- Frozen/live foods: daphnia, microworms, baby brine shrimp, bloodworms (small pieces).

🤝 Behavior and Compatibility
- Temperament: Very peaceful, shy, and friendly.
- Tank Mates:
- Perfect for nano community tanks with tetras, rasboras, guppies, endlers, and shrimp.
- Avoid large or aggressive fish.
- Grouping:
- Must be kept in groups of 6 or more — they are highly social Corydoras.
- Behavior:
- Active bottom scavengers.
- Often “hop” around the tank and sift sand adorably.
