- Origin: Native to South America, specifically the Orinoco River Basin in Venezuela and Colombia. They inhabit shallow, slow-moving waters rich in leaf litter and plants.
- Popularity: Loved for their tiny size, peaceful nature, and adorable “peppered” pattern — a favorite among nano and community tank keepers.
🎨 Appearance
- Color:
- Base body is light beige to silver.
- Covered with fine black and brown speckles, giving a “salt and pepper” look.
- A subtle dark stripe runs horizontally across the mid-body.
- Structure:
- Short, rounded body with barbels around the mouth for foraging.
- Clear fins with delicate spotting.
- Size:
- Very small — 1 to 1.25 inches (2.5–3 cm).
- Lifespan: 4–5 years, sometimes longer with excellent care.
