Price:$20

Origins and Classification

  • Scientific Name: Carassius auratus (Lionhead Oranda variety)
  • Family: Cyprinidae (Carps & Goldfish)
  • Origin: A selectively bred fancy goldfish originating from China and Japan, developed for its unique head growth and rounded body form.
  • Popularity: Highly prized among goldfish keepers for its distinctive “lion-like” wen (head growth), charming face, and graceful swimming. A favorite in both home aquariums and indoor ponds.

🎨 Appearance

  • Color: Found in a range of colors including orange, red, white, black, calico, and bi-color combinations.
  • Structure:
    • Prominent wen (head growth) covering the top and sides of the head, giving a lion-like appearance.
    • Rounded, egg-shaped body with a double tail fin.
    • Short dorsal fin or sometimes no dorsal fin depending on the exact strain.
  • Size: Typically 5–8 inches (12–20 cm); can grow larger in spacious tanks or ponds.
  • Lifespan: 10–15 years, sometimes even 20+ years with excellent care.

🏡 Tank Requirements

  • Tank Size: Minimum 30 gallons for one Oranda; add 10–15 gallons for each additional fish.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 65–75°F (18–24°C)
    • pH: 6.8–7.8
    • Hardness: 5–15 dGH
  • Filtration: Strong filtration is essential — fancy goldfish produce a lot of waste.
  • Substrate: Smooth gravel or sand.
  • Habitat Setup:
    • Provide open swimming areas — their body shape makes them slow swimmers.
    • Add smooth ornaments or plants (no sharp edges to avoid fin/wen injuries).
    • Gentle water flow; avoid high currents.
