Origins and Classification

  • Family: Cyprinidae
  • Origin: Developed through selective breeding in China and Japan, where Orandas are prized for their decorative beauty and signature head growth (wen).
  • Popularity: The White Oranda (Large) is admired for its pure white body, elegant flowing fins, and impressive wen development — a true showpiece in fancy goldfish collections.

🎨 Appearance

  • Color:
    • Solid pure white or pearlescent white body.
    • Fins may be translucent white or have slight metallic sheen.
  • Structure:
    • Prominent wen (head growth) giving a rounded lion-like appearance.
    • Deep, round body with double tail (fantail).
    • Long, graceful fins that flow while swimming.
  • Size:
    • Large Orandas typically reach 7–9 inches (18–23 cm) in body length.
    • With fins included, total size can appear 10–12 inches.
  • Lifespan: 10–15 years, potentially longer with excellent care.

🏡 Tank Requirements

  • Tank Size: Minimum 40 gallons for one large Oranda; add 20 gallons per additional fish.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 65–75°F (18–24°C)
    • pH: 6.8–7.8
    • Hardness: 5–15 dGH
  • Lighting: Soft to moderate.
  • Substrate: Smooth gravel or sand (avoids fin tears).

    • Add smooth decorations and soft plants (Anubias, Java Fern).
    • Use gentle filtration — avoid strong currents.
